I learned block printing in high school art class, as is the case for many people. I love block prints because they are handmade, yet easily reproducible. I think a lot of people want to have beautiful handmade artworks in their home, but they can't afford an original painting. And as the artist it can be difficult to put a price on a one-of a-kind-item. I have found block prints to be a great solution to this problem.
The process itself can feel like magic at times. There is a transformation that happens with the image, as you move through sketching, in which you draw the lines, to carving, in which you get rid of everything that is not the line. And then after the hours spent creating the block, there is the instant gratification of pulling a print from it.
